Dental fillings are used to fill holes or cavities in your teeth, repairing minor tooth decay or damage. They will further prevent more extensive damage to the tooth where decay is present.
The different types of fillings are: Porcelain fillings, Composite fillings, Gold fillings, Amalgam fillings.
Our dentists will discuss the best options for you.
Your dentist will recommend the best option based on the location and size of the cavity, your preferences, and your budget.
Composite Resin (Tooth-Coloured) The most commonly used filling material today. Made from plastic resin and fine glass particles, colour-matched to your teeth. Bonded directly to the tooth in a single appointment. Suitable for front and back teeth.
Amalgam (Silver) A strong, long-lasting metal filling suitable for large cavities in back teeth. Silver in colour, so more visible. Its use has declined significantly, with composite resin now preferred in most situations.
Glass Ionomer Cement A tooth-coloured material that releases fluoride to help protect against further decay. Not as strong as composite or amalgam, so best suited for smaller fillings, temporary fillings, areas near the gum line, or baby teeth.
Ceramic (Porcelain) Custom-made from dental porcelain or advanced ceramics such as zirconia. Excellent aesthetics, very durable, and highly stain-resistant.
Gold Extremely durable but highly visible and costly. Custom-made in a laboratory. Rarely used today.
Before the procedure: Your dentist will examine the tooth, possibly take an X-ray, and discuss which filling material is most suitable for you.
During the procedure:
Most fillings take 20 to 60 minutes depending on the size and location. You may feel pressure during the procedure but should not feel pain.
After the procedure: The numbness typically wears off within 1 to 3 hours. It is normal to experience some mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure for a few days, to up to a week or so. Avoid eating on the numb side until feeling returns to prevent accidentally biting your cheek or tongue.
