Do you snore?
Does your partner complain about your snoring?
Have you ever woken yourself up gasping or choking?
Are you sleepy during the day and don’t seem to feel refreshed in the morning?
You may have undiagnosed sleep apnoea. If so, you may benefit from an anti-snoring night guard appliance known as a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS).
A Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) is a custom-made dental device worn while sleeping to help reduce snoring and improve obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
The appliance works by gently holding the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep. This helps keep the airway more open, reducing airway collapse, snoring, and breathing interruptions overnight.
At MedCentral Dental, we are extremely proud to offer custom MAS therapy at our clinic as part of our commitment to your overall health and wellbeing.
A Mandibular Advancement Splint may be suitable for patients who:
In some cases, patients with severe sleep apnoea who are unable to use CPAP may also benefit from a MAS under the guidance of their sleep physician.
Many Australians are now diagnosed through a home sleep study, which is a convenient test you can do in your own bed. You don’t necessarily need to be referred to spend the night in a sleep clinic.
Your GP can refer you for a home-based sleep study if your screening suggests you may have OSA. Medicare rebates may be available for eligible patients.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy remains the gold standard treatment for moderate to severe sleep apnoea. However, many patients find CPAP difficult to tolerate due to the mask, airflow pressure, noise, or discomfort. A MAS offers a simpler, more comfortable solution.
A Mandibular Advancement Splint offers an alternative treatment option that is:
For many patients, improved comfort means improved compliance — which is essential for successful long-term treatment.
Patients may experience:
At our clinic, we fabricate our Mandibular Advancement Splints using high-quality medical-grade nylon material rather than traditional acrylic. It offers a number of advantages over traditional acrylic appliances:
- Stronger and more durable — Nylon is highly resistant to fracture, with clinical reports showing a greater than 99% reduction in fracture rates compared to acrylic devices.
- Thinner, smoother and more comfortable — Nylon technology allows for a much thinner appliance (as thin as 0.5–1 mm, compared to 2–3 mm with acrylic), improving comfort and fit inside the mouth.
- Flexible and lightweight — Nylon's semi-flexible nature means it adapts better to the contours of your teeth, reducing pressure points and improving night-time comfort.
- Long-lasting — Unlike acrylic, nylon is not prone to the same degree of degradation over time, making it a more durable long-term investment.
The result is a more comfortable appliance that many patients find easier to wear consistently throughout the night.

Your journey to better sleep with a Mandibular Advancement Splint involves:
Some patients may experience temporary:
These symptoms are usually mild and improve as you adapt to the appliance.
If you suffer from snoring, poor sleep, or have been diagnosed with sleep apnoea, make an appointment to see whether a Mandibular Advancement Splint may be suitable for you.
A MAS is a medical device. We recommend all patients obtain a sleep study prior to commencing treatment. Please discuss your suitability with our dental team. If you need a referral for a sleep study, please contact your GP.
