Dentistry for Seniors

Looking After Your Teeth as You Age

As we age, teeth wear down, old fillings can weaken, and gums may recede. These changes mean older adults often need specific dental care to stay comfortable and eat well.

At MedCentral Dental, we offer a 10% discount for seniors who show their seniors card at reception for your check up and clean appointment.

Common Dental Concerns

Old fillings can crack or break down over time. When too little healthy tooth remains, a dental crown ("cap") can protect the tooth and restore chewing function. Crowns may also be recommended after root canal treatment.

Receding gums expose root surfaces, which are softer and more decay-prone than enamel. Root decay is one of the most common problems in older adults, especially in those with dry mouth. High-strength fluoride toothpaste, tooth fillings, or professional fluoride treatments can help protect exposed roots.

Bacteria cause inflammation of the gums and gradual bone loss around teeth. Early gum disease (gingivitis) is reversible, but advanced disease (periodontitis) can lead to tooth loosening and loss. Smoking and diabetes increase risk of gum disease. Deep gum cleaning may be required and thorough daily brushing are essential.

Over 400 medications can reduce saliva flow, including blood pressure tablets, antidepressants, and pain relievers. Without saliva's natural protection, decay can develop rapidly. Sipping water, chewing sugar-free gum, avoiding sugary drinks, and using fluoride products can all help. You  may find more decay happening more frequently.

Years of chewing, grinding, and acidic foods gradually wear down teeth, causing sensitivity and bite changes. Your dentist may suggest crowns or bonding to rebuild and protect worn teeth.

Tooth loss affects chewing, speech, and appearance. Replacement options include:

- Implants (surgically placed posts that feel natural and support a crown or denture)

- Bridges (fixed, supported by neighbouring teeth)

- Dentures (removable, most affordable)

Your dentist checks for signs during routine examinations. Report any persistent sores, ulcers, lumps, or red/white patches promptly.

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
Clean between teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.
Tell your dentist about all medications you take and any changes to your medical health
Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleaning.
Report any mouth sores, pain, or chewing difficulties promptly.

If you have any questions, please ask your dental team. We are here to help you keep your smile healthy and comfortable.
